The Book Project - African Children's Libraries

African Children's Libraries has made progress over this past year and has shipped its first cargo container of books to Liberia! We were able to assist in setting up 11 children's libraries mostly in rural Liberia.

We are asking for your support in the following ways:

-Finding warehouse space in Portland Oregon or the Willamette Valley for either short term for August-September or long term-about -1000 square feet for approximately a year

-Monetary & Volunteering

-Sorting and boxing books -Finding or providing sturdy boxes for the books- we need a more uniform size
-Picking up books from Portland schools

-Grant writing beginning in September or leads for appropriate grant sources
-Other fund raising
-Suggestions for board members especially another non-profit volunteer
By shipping approximately 375 boxes of books we paid less than the combined shipping costs of the last four years. So $50 will cover the cost of 5 boxes, rather than $50 covering the shipping of one box last year. $300 ships a pallet of 30 boxes. There were also textbooks in this container which were distributed by the YMCA in Monrovia where Lyn Gray is a consultant and L.E.A.P., the Liberian educators non-profit supported by Friends of Liberia.

We have had donations from $5- $500 and are grateful to our faithful friends who have made this project happen with their donations. Please consider contributing once again. Our goal is $7000. .

All donations are tax deductible.

Thank you again for your support and contributions. If you are in the Portland area and would like to help pack the container let me know. I'll let you know when that packing day will be.

Thanks, thanks, thanks!

More information

In April-May Ann Easterly worked with four YMCA schools and seven L.E.A.P. schools in Liberia. She was able to go up country to see the village where she served with Peace Corps. The teachers there are excited about having a school library. The community has pitched in tomake mud bricks and now have a library in its own building. Lester Paye from Foequellie is the assistant director of the YMCA in Monrovia and the Y arranged for transportation to sites in Liberia. It was so good to have a working team there! With the a $2000 grant from Friends of Liberia we were able to ship our first cargo container of books.
