In April the news came that rebel forces were nearing Cuttington University, where the LEAP workshops take place with elementary teachers from four counties. Supporters, funders, Liberian facilitators and the U.S. teachers feared that a year of planning and collecting supplies  would end in disappointment for all.
Thanks to great supporters at the Phebe Hospital, Jesuit Refugee Service (Gbarnga) and Cuttington University, the teachers were assured in late May that conditions appear safe, business in the Gbarnga area has returned to normal and that the invasion has been turned back to the northern border. The LEAP teachers and planners want to particularly thank the funders and the board of Friends of Liberia, who allowed the teachers to determine whether to go.
This year six Liberian principals and teachers, three women and three men, will assist in  running the workshop. Throughout the teaching year, with the assistance of LEAP, they will convene followup meetings with teacher participants to discuss what is working in the classroom, what adaptations have been made and whether they are seeing results in their students.
